Extracurricular Activities
Each individual has the opportunity to develop their strengths and to discover new talents and interests. Activities vary from term to term and are relevant to each phase.
Across the academic year, students take part in a number of school trips to enhance their classroom learning. In addition, children are offered the opportunity to participate in a variety of extracurricular clubs during lunch breaks, and before the school day.
We recognise the constraints that a school such as ours has with delivering extracurricular activities outside the school day, due to the limitations imposed by a large percentage of students travelling to school on SEN Transport from multiple areas of the country, and from other counties. Therefore, we attempt to include as many opportunities to access activities through our Preparing for Adulthood curriculum so that students do not lose out.
Residential trips are also a great way to form new skills. Students gain a whole range of interpersonal skills including leadership abilities, team building, trust and respect, which leads to greater self-confidence, self-esteem and resilience. We find that some students who don’t have much confidence in their abilities in class may excel on a residential trip, which will improve their performance and friendships back at school.
